Jacob glanced up at Bella's profile from where he stood at the sink in the kitchen. He couldn't understand how a person could love someone so much. To the point where he could close his eyes and see her image perfectly in his head--every sparkle in her eyes, every hair on her head, the smell of her skin, the taste of her lips. His wolf buddies had always talked about how powerful imprinting was...that there was no way you could miss it once you met the person you would imprint on. There was an unmistakable, obvious bond that would connect right away. Jacob couldn't say for certain, because he'd yet to experience his imprint, but he wondered if it felt like this. Like his feelings towards Bella...

His mind flooded with all these thoughts, he put the freshly-washed cups back into their respective places and tore a paper towel off the roll, wiping his wet hands. He decided to change the subject to something more...neutral. "So, the danger's over right?" He looked towards Bella. "I mean, I haven't heard about any more bloodthirsty, tresspassing, revenge-seeking vampires lately." His tone was slightly joking, though in a way, he was completely serious about what he was saying.

Bella looked over at Jacob and smiled softly. "Yup, it's over. No more crazy vampires heading my way." Yet she wanted to say. Bella hadn't told Jacob about the Volturi and the promise Alice had made them. The Volturi would have killed her and Edward if Alice hadn't stopped them. Good ole Alice... Bella knew that if Jake knew the truth he would lose it. She wanted to tell him so badly but she knew all too well how hurt he would be. It wasn't fair. Why couldn't everything be just.. normal? Why couldn't all the fairy tales she had read as a kid stay fairy tales? She wished that vampires and werewolves didn't exist. She wished there was just human Edward and human Jacob. But wasn't that what had drawn Bella to Edward in the first place? The danger?

Her eyes held a very far away look as she glanced up at Jacob. "Jake..." she said slowly, keeping her voice soft. "There is something you need to know. Something you aren't going to like... You have to promise me that you will stay calm..." Bella wasn't entirely sure if she should be telling him this. It wasn't something he would want to know, but he needed to.

Jacob chuckled lightly at Bella's first comment. He was glad that the whole Victoria-and-her-newbie-leeches-crew thing was over. It wasn't the fact that he'd gone days and days without sleeping, always on guard and protecting Bella and Charlie that bothered Jake. It was that wary and defensive front and constant worrying that he'd had to put up with during that stretch of time that made him tired just thinking about it. He'd tried to suppress his genuine fear and concern from Bella then; he hadn't wanted to add on to the tense and panicked mood that had seemed to suffocate everyone during those few weeks. But he'd truly been afraid for Bella. Afraid that Victoria would somehow break through their defenses. That she'd somehow get to Bella. That somehow, Jacob would lose her. That somehow, he wouldn't be able to protect her.

But it was all over now. She was here. Safe and sound. And that's all that mattered.

But then, Bella went on and something in the tone of her voice sent a slight chill down Jacob's spine.

"There is something you need to know. Something you aren't going to like."

What was that supposed to mean? Jacob walked over to the couch slowly, his eyes searching her's for some sign of whatever she was about to tell him. "Bella...what is it?"
